Using the Right Toothpaste

A Dental Focus on Tooth Sensitivity
Having sensitive teeth does require a little extra care in selecting the proper toothpaste. Avoiding a tartar-control toothpaste is typically best for sensitive teeth. Instead, use a regular fluoride toothpaste to cut down on sensitivity. Some toothpastes themselves can actually lead to sensitivity. For example, many dentists recommend using a tartar-control toothpaste after a cleaning to help prevent the build-up of tartar that may lead to gum disease. However, patients may develop sensitivity after using it, and we recommend that they change toothpaste. Toothpastes with whitening agents have been known to cause sensitivity as well. Talk to your dentist about which toothpaste is right for you.
